What is a rolling blackout?

A rolling blackout, also known as a rotating outage, is when an electric utility intentionally shuts off electricity service to different areas for a certain period of time in order to prevent the entire grid from collapsing. This is typically done as a last resort during times of extremely high electricity demand or insufficient supply.

Rolling blackouts are often implemented during heatwaves, natural disasters, or other emergency situations where the electric grid is strained beyond its capacity. By strategically cutting power to different areas for short intervals, the utility can prevent a complete blackout and ensure that critical infrastructure and services are maintained.

While rolling blackouts can be inconvenient for those affected, they are necessary to prevent more widespread and prolonged power outages. It is important for residents and businesses to have emergency plans in place to cope with the impact of rolling blackouts.
